Interviewing Creative Folk / Shyanne Clarke

Interviews

Excited to share the work of Shyanne Clarke, a visual artist on the Sunshine Coast who loves to explore layers and mark-making. Her background includes exciting collabs in the commercial realm, from swimwear to boutique hotel murals with her beautiful art elevating spaces and products. Shyanne is currently practicing as a fine artist, and is undertaking an artist residency at Subtropic Studios in Caloundra, where she also has a solo exhibition currently showing. Her website lists her up-to-date exhibition info and her instagram provides lovely, work-in-progress, sneak-peeks!  Her new wave series (which I’ve been fortunate to view in the flesh) are incredible!

Thanks Shyanne for taking the time to chat and for making beautiful art!

1/ When do you feel most creative?

I think that initial spark of inspiration makes you feel creative, seeing something you love that you can’t wait to draw or paint. But I think I feel truly the most creative when I push through the procrastination, I sit right on the edge of my ability, its not too easy, not too hard and I drop into the flow state. That’s when you feel alive and creative.

2/ What sets you apart from other artists?
Such a hard question this one. I think we are more similar than we realise but also unique in our own little quirks. I’d say on the surface, starting with a commercial career and moving into a fine art career is an unusual way to go about the process as an artist (it’s usually the other way around).

3/ Collaborations you are super proud of?
I’ve been so privileged to do some really awesome collaborations, but my favourites are usually when it’s good for people and/or planet.

Strait The Label – celebrating Torres Strait culture
(I hope to paint the founder Alyssa Mills and her husband Patty Mills for the Archibald Prize one year. Team Mills Foundation is worth checking out and supporting as well.)

Luxey Cup – reusable cups for zero waste planet

Art School Co – holding safe space for growth through creativity

4/ Any brain hacks for being bold and putting you and your work out there?
Matt Damon in the movie ‘We bought a zoo’ says
‘sometimes all you need, is 20 seconds of insane courage…’

5/ Can you share your future vision (aka ‘the big dream’ view)?
I’d love to win the Archibald prize one day, only 10 women have won it in history.
