/Traits

Virgo is depicted as a maiden carrying an ear of grain at harvest time. Virgo’s are especially good at separating the wheat from the chaff, they seek out all the facts and sides in every situation. They love living in accordance with their morals with a quest to always refine and make better (a slight perfectionist!). They are extremely kind and giving individuals, on the ready to lend a hand and in return, hate being let down or asking for help. They are responsible and reliable hard workers, always getting the job done without complaining. Life long learners, strongly intelligent with a fierce memory. They love attention to detail, are very observant and naturally creative.

/Symbol

The glyph represents the maiden with the loop at the end suggestive of crossed legs for the virgin’s chastity. The ‘m’ shape is also said to represent intestines, as Virgo is the ruler of the digestive system.

Virgo is the largest constellation in the zodiac – prominent in the spring sky in the northern hemisphere and visible all night in March and April. Spica, is the brightest star in the Virgo constellation and is latin for ‘ear of grain’. The constellation Virgo takes on alternative forms dependent on the mythology. In Babylonian society, the constellation represented goddess Shala who ruled over fertility and harvest. Early Greek astronomy associated the constellation with their goddess Demeter (ruler of agriculture, fertility, and harvest) and also her daughter Persephone, the goddess of spring growth (fertility of vegetation) Whilst, the Roman equivalent to Demeter was goddess Ceres.

Another Greek myth identifies Virgo as the virgin goddess Astreae who was the last immortal to abandon earth and the end of the silver age (when the gods fled to Olympus) hence the sign’s association with Earth.

In Egyptian mythology, the time when the Sun was in the constellation of Virgo was the beginning of the wheat harvest, connecting Virgo back to the wheat grain. Virgo has the equivalent sign in Indian astrology as the Kanya (which also means “maiden”).  During the Middle ages was also sometimes associated with the Virgin Mary.
