Blown Away Art Challenge 3/7
I’m here with a fun extension of the Netflix glass-blowing competition show – Blown Away. Watching the show gave me wild ideas of finding a glass-blowing studio and filling my home with amazing handmade glass! When I got serious with myself (and the logistics!) I realised that fantasy firmly falls in the ‘probably-not-likely-to-eventuate’ realm!
I wanted to make sure the creative fire, lit by the show, was still put to good use! The aim of this post is to allow us to join in on the weekly challenges, no matter what creative realm we play in 🙂
RULES
Loose rules to approach the weekly challenges!
1) Watch an episode – pausing once the judges explain the theme. Allow around 15 minutes to come up with an idea – this is based roughly on what appears to happen on the show!
2) Complete the challenge before watching the rest of the show but if you want to watch the show first I promise I won’t call you out for cheating 🙂
3) Try and stick to the time length given on the show
CHALLENGE
“we want you to take two synonymous words that go together to create one piece”
Think about using an ‘idiomatic synonym pair’ that is, an expression using two main words with similar meaning. The example given was ‘pure and simple’.
Try typing ‘word pair’ into google & make sure you pick a word pair that’s similar rather than opposite in meaning!
Length: 4 hours
Evaluation Criteria: Design/Concept/Technical Skill
MY CHALLENGE
I was really confused with this week’s challenge, I initially took the challenge as choosing one word, finding a synonym, and creating a pair (which would be a very open challenge!!). After watching the full episode I realised they wanted the contestants to use well-known expressions!
I did some tweaking and ended up using ‘peace and quiet’ alongside my current water bird obsession (a brolga!) – a slight cheat this week!
Critique
Season three, episode seven, had resident judge Katherine Gray, alongside glass artists Robin and Julia Rogers. The critiques this week were around the artists not pushing themselves enough technically or not taking enough time with each element. Suggestions were made to improve realism, play with scale & proximity and be more accurate with colour matching. The judges applauded, the use of space, texture, bright colours, multiple layers, telling a story and conceptually being layered and compelling.
My own critique: I really like my simple design BUT I think I would have got roasted this week. I didn’t push myself technically or use the allotted time and I know I could have told a more compelling conceptual story. My goal was to let the bird speak for itself but I don’t think that would have held up in this week’s judging court 😛
