Blown Away Art Challenge 3/2

Art Prompts

I’m here with a fun extension of the Netflix glass-blowing competition show – Blown Away. Watching the show gave me wild ideas of finding a glass-blowing studio and filling my home with amazing handmade glass! When I got serious with myself (and the logistics!) I realised that fantasy firmly falls in the ‘probably-not-likely-to-eventuate’ realm!

I wanted to make sure the creative fire, lit by the show, was still put to good use! The aim of this post is to allow us to join in on the weekly challenges, no matter what creative realm we play in 🙂

RULES

Loose rules to approach the weekly challenges!
1) Watch an episode – pausing once the judges explain the theme.  Allow around 15 minutes to come up with an idea – this is based roughly on what appears to happen on the show!
2) Complete the challenge before watching the rest of the show but if you want to watch the show first I promise I won’t call you out for cheating 🙂
3) Try and stick to the time length given on the show

CHALLENGE

“Create an original set of 6 custom glasses specifically designed for your drink.”
*Since this week’s challenge is super glass specific, I’m changing the challenge to

“Create an artwork inspired by a drink”

The contestants received a randomly selected drink but you can choose from any of their options:
non-alcoholic raspberry mojito
espresso martini
vanilla milkshake
Irish coffee
champagne
Belgian dark ale
rusty nail
hot n sassy
banana daiquiri

Length: 4 hours
Evaluation Criteria: Design/Originality/Functionality/Technical Skill

MY CHALLENGE

I choose the banana daiquiri because it seemed the most fun! I did a sneaky google of what makes up a banana daiquiri (and it seemed the contestants were given some base notes about their drink – and allowed to taste!). My first thought was to do a deconstructed version as a pattern. As I started to paint, it morphed into a sun and since the sun seems entwined with drinking daiquiris I ran with it 🙂

Critique

Season three, episode two, had resident judge Katherine Gray, alongside bar tender Veronica Saye.  The critiques included a lot of commentary on the execution of the glasses (not functional/not matching/too opaque, rim too thick, etc.).  There were also critiques based on the interpretation being too literal/needing to be more refined/or a closer match to the theme of the drink.  Some positive comments included “fun, really pretty, cute, whimsical”.

My own critique: It’s hard to self-critique this one because turning the theme into an art challenge removed the technical element of making glasses and having them match and be functional.  I do think I matched my drink’s theme, creating an artwork that was fun and bright!  Probably would have lost some points on technical skills, maybe too simple (?!?) but overall I’m super happy with how my piece turned out 🙂
