Fiona Harding/Spirit You
B. 1984
Fiona Harding (Spirit You) is an interdisciplinary Australian artist based in Namba/Nambour, whose practice examines the link between the physical and the spiritual.
Through a multidisciplinary approach spanning painting, installation, sculpture, costume, and video performance, Harding seeks to articulate a reverence for nature and render spiritual experiences into tangible forms. Her hand-built, labor-intensive processes serve as both a meditative practice and a critique of the efficiency-driven imperatives of capitalism. The repetition inherent in her slow-making methods anchors her practice in the material world while facilitating an inquiry that extends beyond rational and empirical frameworks.
Recurring motifs and personal iconography underpin Harding’s predominantly autobiographical practice. The use of heightened colour palettes and pronounced contrasts seeks to establish a universal resonance, inviting broader engagement.
Current explorations include; interconnectedness, the cyclical nature of life, psychedelics, and the consciousness of non-human beings. By translating transformative experiences into accessible visual forms, she aims to foster reflective encounters encouraging viewers to engage with deeper conceptual and existential questions.
Working on the unceded lands of the Kabi Kabi/Gubbi Gubbi People and honouring their role as traditional custodians and ongoing stewards, Harding acknowledges the privilege of creating work that responds to the surrounding natural world.
