Interviewing Creative Folk/ Sasha Parlett

Interviews

During our shared time in The Path mentoring program, I had the privilege of getting to delve into Sasha’s arts practice. Sasha is a first nations filmmaker and photographer and the founder of Red Handed Productions.

A strong thread throughout her work is a drive to tell stories and to specifically amplify the voices of those underrepresented. When you encounter Sasha’s work it’s clear she prioritises the subject, capturing them in a way that lets them shine through with their own individuality.

Sasha is a creative powerhouse across her industry with experience in writing, producing, directing, filming, and editing. It was a delight to get to see her documentary, WE ARE ONE, which was exhibited recently at Lantana Space (Oct 2022). Through WE ARE ONE, stories of the First XI were told, educating viewers on Indigenous cricket history within Australia.

I cannot wait to see what Sasha does next ๐Ÿ™‚

/ Is their a specific idea or concept that’s overarching in your practice?

My business has the overarching concept of combating imposter syndrome by creating space for media representation of the underrepresented. One key factor (among many) of imposter syndrome is that there isn’t diverse media representation to see examples of what is capable for all peoples. So using my skills I am working towards changing this.

/ You’ve worked on such varied projects, is there one or a few that stand out?
I love the variety of filmmaking and photography. It really opens up to showcase just how many amazing things are out there. I definitely have a big love for working with local people to share their amazing achievements and showcase their skills.

/ What role does your identity as First Nations artist play within your practice?
Being First Nations means that all of my work is created through a First Nations lens. It is a part of my identity so my creative process comes from my experiences and who I am.

/ Any tips for staying sane whilst editing a big project?
Take short breaks and remember to eat! Also, leave all the muggle stuff for later.

5/ Can you share your future vision (aka ‘the big dream’ view)?
Safe working spaces and good media representation for all! I really want policies in place for protection for First Nations peoples both on set and on screen.
