ART PROMPTS: WEEKLY CREATIVE CHALLENGE /4
Are you ready to join a fun art challenge?
Art prompts is here to kick start and unblock your creativity, with one prompt and one constraint to get you back creating and having fun. The creative prompt is there for a starting point with the idea to approach the challenge freely. It’s aimed at artists but is open to any creatives (musicians, writers, makers) the more the merrier. I’ll post new prompts via my insta (@spirityou) or through my newsletter (sign up at bottom of this page). I encourage everyone to share their creations using the hashtag #syartprompts
I can’t wait to connect and see what you come up with 🙂
Let’s all inspire each other to create better art!
Prompt /4: Draw from Observation then Memory
This week’s challenge is to draw something from observation and then redraw the same thing using only your memory. Hopefully this week’s challenge will reveal something about the way you create. If you’re someone who draws exclusively from reference it might challenge you to take a looser direction. If you’re someone that doesn’t use reference it may shine a light on where you’re technically off. In kindergarden class you see kids relying on preconceived shapes in their drawings, from the classic M shaped birds to round trees and stylised clouds. These early drawings contain learned symbols rather than true observation reference. Don’t discredit drawing from memory though as that’s where a special sauce that’s unique to you lives!
CONSTRAINT: ONE COLOUR
If you’re in the mood, limit your work to one colour.
My EXAMPLE
I decided to grab out my pink felt pens and draw my pink vans. I sketched from observation first and then from memory.
Things I learned:
I cannot draw shoes!
I rely heavily on reference in my art – I wouldn’t mind building the ‘from memory’ muscle in the future
A truer representation (of what’s inside my brain) would have been to start with the memory sketch first rather than have it tainted by what I had just seen/drawn
Drawing from memory created something more original and there’s worth in that even if my memory failed to remember the nuanced details
It was interesting to see a sketchy style emerge in both drawings
